A Bit(e) of Background
Dog parks have, over recent years and for good reason, become increasingly popular in counties and cities across America. Dog parks provide a safe place, for dogs of any age and size, to play, socialize, and exercise. Dog trainers and pet care professionals alike; agree that getting adequate physical exercise, mental and emotional stimulation, along with proper socialization can greatly benefit dogs in all stages of life. A well exercised dog is often times happier and healthier; thus leading to more positive behavior being displayed, both in public and at home, as well as a marked decrease in destructive, neurotic, and aggressive behaviors (i.e. jumping on people, excessive barking, damaging your personal possessions, etc…). Dog parks are commonly found as an addition to a larger community park. Enclosing dog parks, via fencing, will prevent dogs from infringing upon patrons using other park amenities. Groups of dog owners and their dogs, collectively, can help deter criminal activity and many times become the ‘eyes and ears’ of the local police departments. Dog parks create a sense of community. Bringing dog owners together presents an opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. Dogs and dog parks are responsible for many lasting friendships between people who may have otherwise never met one and other. Recently, a dog park committee has been founded. The committee is comprised mainly of local area residents. The committee’s members all have a genuine love for dogs and all have a common goal in mind: to see a dog park built in the City of Winchester! |
